Neck Pain? Simple stretches to alleviate the pain

Neck Pain?

Simple stretches to alleviate the pain

The end of the year brings with it many things: staff parties, gifts, deadlines, fatigue and often, neck pain. Most of us feel the effect that a year of hard work has on us. If you take your hand and gently squeeze that muscle above your shoulder (called the trapezius), you will know exactly what I am talking about. Whether you have an office job, whether you are on the road, or whether you have a physically demanding job, 90% of us carry tension in our shoulders and neck. The causes of this tension are numerous. It may be from sitting at your desk with poor posture (a head forward position); it may be from driving for long periods of time; it may be from talking on the phone; or it may be from doing physically demanding tasks. Whatever the cause, however, the effect is clear: tension in the neck, shoulders and head (often leading to headaches and migraines).

Treating neck pain is a holistic approach. It is best treated once the cause has been identified, and when it has been diagnosed. Assuming you don’t have major pathology, however, neck pain / tension often responds best to massage, stretching and strengthening. The below stretches, if done daily, will certainly help alleviate some of the pain. Why not give them a go for 7 days? I can almost guarantee a significant reduction in your pain!

It is best to stretch when the muscles are warm, so I suggest stretching immediately after your bath or shower. Hold each stretch for 15 – 20 seconds, and repeat 3 times. Remember to breathe steadily whilst stretching and to never hold your breath.
