17 May Easy stress relieving exercises to do on the weekend
After a long, hard week, most of us can’t wait to get home, throw off our shoes, and flop onto the couch to vegetate and wind down. Often, the last thing we feel like doing is going to the gym to workout. Our bodies ache and we wish we had won the lottery so that we could afford a personal masseuse. That being said, very few (if any) of us will ever win the lottery, and very few us ever make the time to go and get the knots massaged out by a massage therapist. We are thus left with tension, headaches, poor mobility and pain. Whilst the couch is often a great way to wind down, a nice hot bath or shower followed by a few simple exercises could help you relax even more. Exercise has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, increase the “happy” hormones (endorphins), lower blood pressure and boost the immune system (to name but a few). All you will need is a bath tub or shower, a “beverage” (or two), and about 20 minutes. The result? A weekend of true relaxation!
Here’s what to do:
- Pour yourself a beverage (wine often does the trick!)
- Run yourself a bath (add some bubbles and light some candles), or stand under the shower
- Soak in the bath or let the water from the shower run onto your neck and back for 15 – 20 minutes
- Perform these 4 easy relaxing stretches (see instructions below)
- Pour yourself one more “beverage”
- Have the sleep of your life!
Stretching instructions:
- Hold each stretch for 15 – 20 seconds
- Do not rock, or sway or move during the stretches
- Always keep the spine straight when holding a stretch
- Perform each stretch 3 times
Stretch 1: Gently tilt your head to the side, relax the shoulder down and hold.
Stretch 2: Armpit stretch
Stretch 3: Side stretch
Stretch 4: Chest Stretch – Use the door frame as the immovable object
Live long and prosper,
Jo
